Summary:
The object of this research is the study of crime fiction and its evolution. This is achieved through the examination of the works of Italian and Greek authors, starting from crime and detective fiction to Mediterranean or noir novel. This type of literature, which in its early years was overlooked, moves and intertwines between fantasy and reality, and delves into the evil that invades human life, depending on the social context, the era and the temperament of each writer. It is the literature of evil (la letteratura del male), where violence, crime, mystery, the efforts to find the culprits and the administration of justice prevail.
In the first part, organised crime was examined through the novels of Italian authors Leonardo Sciascia, Roberto Saviano, Elena Ferrante and Andrea Camilleri. These four authors presented the Italian reality and the phenomenon of violence in relation to the prevailing socio-political conditions.
In the second part, the Greek representatives of the Mediterranean genre, Giannis Maris, Petros Markaris, Theodoros Benakis and Hilda Papadimitriou, were studied, and their most representative works of detective fiction were analysed according to the type, purpose and narrative technique.
In the third part a comparative study was carried out, focusing on the similarities and differences found between the aforementioned Italian and Greek novelists and their works, who investigate crime and discover the truth that will lead to the resolution of the mystery. In this part, innovative elements and themes are presented which make the noir genre more and more interesting for the reader. Moreover, the thesis emphasises in discovering the reasons why crime is committed, criminal profiling and behaviour, as well as the extent of society's influence on it. How the mentality of each era and generation, the culture, the socio-political place, customs, principles and ideologies convolute and play an important factor. Finally, the way each character is narrated, the characteristics of the detective and the criminal, as well as their place and relationship with their surroundings is explored.
Oggetto di questa ricerca è lo studio del romanzo poliziesco e della sua evoluzione, mediante l'esame delle opere di autori italiani e greci, osservando quale sia stato il percorso dal romanzo poliziesco canonico al romanzo mediterraneo o noir.
Nella prima parte, il fenomeno del crimine organizzato tipico della realtà italiana è stato esaminato attraverso i romanzi degli autori italiani Leonardo Sciascia, Roberto Saviano, Elena Ferrante e Andrea Camilleri. Questi quattro autori hanno presentato il fenomeno della criminalità in relazione alle condizioni socio-politiche prevalenti nei territori maggiormente interessati da fenomeni criminosi, in particolare mafiosi.
Nella seconda parte sono stati studiati i rappresentanti greci del genere mediterraneo, Giannis Maris, Petros Markaris, Theodoros Benakis e Hilda Papadimitriou, e sono state analizzate le opere più rappresentanti della loro narrativa poliziesca per tipologia, finalità e tecnica narrativa.
Nella terza parte è stato svolto uno studio comparativo, soffermandosi sulle somiglianze e differenze riscontrate tra i suddetti romanzieri italiani e greci e le loro opere, che indagano sul delitto e scoprono la verità che porterà alla risoluzione del mistero. In questa parte si presentano elementi e tematiche innovative che rendono il genere del noir sempre più interessante per il lettore. Le tematiche che sono state analizzate nello studio sono le seguenti: il profilo dell'assassino, il comportamento criminale, nonché l'influenza della società su di esso; la mentalità di ogni epoca e generazione, la cultura, il quadro socio-politico, il comportamento di ogni personaggio, le caratteristiche dell'investigatore e del criminale, l'elemento femminile e il suo ruolo nel crimine.
Infine la tesi presenta i motivi che spingono a commettere un crimine attraverso lo studio dei testi e la rappresentazione della realtà mediante la fiction e le testimonianze degli autori.
