Summary:
The current study focuses on the field of Rhetoric and specifically on the use of rhetoric textbooks “Progymnasmata” as teaching tools from ancient times to the modern era. The preparatory exercises discussed in this study are a set of oral and written exercises that were used in schools of rhetoric from antiquity until the 18th century.
This study examines the categories of preparatory exercises “Progymnasmata”, references the contributions of theorists in this branch of rhetoric and lists the benefits of these exercises in education. Additionally, the study places a special emphasis on ithopoiia, reconstruction-construction, and chreia training and how these can be utilized in today's primary education. Teaching plans are also presented that can encourage teachers to incorporate these exercises into their curriculum, as they can be interesting to include in a variety of subjects.
The exercises, through their increasing difficulty, can be a useful tool for teachers to provide their students with the necessary skills by encouraging their creative thinking and developing their innate abilities in both written and spoken language. Furthermore, students will be able to learn important virtues such as the assimilation of taught knowledge, logical transition to the next stage, respect for opposing viewpoints, flexibility in language choices, and familiarity with important figures and timeless values. It is hoped that these training programs will be a useful tool to promote rhetorical literacy in primary education and to cultivate rational thinking.
