The value of preoperative preparation in relation to postoperative expectations. Systematic review
Summary:
Introduction: Surgical interventions include invasive techniques and surgical procedures that affect the patient on a physical and psychosocial level and can cause intense stress. The fear and anxiety associated with pre-operative or post-operative pain used to be a major negative factor that even in today's era, still affects the timely attendance of patients in the operating room. The role of the nurse is crucial in preparing the patient in the preoperative period, supporting the patient during surgery and ensuring proper monitoring and care in the postoperative period. In particular, communication and information provision enhance the development of the therapeutic relationship with the patient and has a positive effect on the outcome of the disease and the reduction of anxiety.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was the value of preoperative preparation in relation to a postoperative course.
Methodology: The literature search was performed in electronic databases such as: pubMed, science direct, google scholar. Specifically, articles from scientific journals were searched using keywords (e.g., preoperative preparation, preoperative anxiety, skin preparation, etc.), while the time period of the articles was set for the period from 2015 to the present (2022). The scientific journals searched were identified from the search results in the electronic databases.
Results: According to the inclusion or exclusion criteria set within this study, 88 results (n=88) from the preceding search were examined. Through this process, it was found that 29 articles met all the criteria set.
Conclusions: We found that pre-operative preparation is important for the post-operative outcome of each patient. There are also areas that most studies focus on regarding pre-operative preparation: site cleansing, physical exercises, nutrition, psychological preparation etc. Particular emphasis is placed on pre-operative anxiety and how to deal with it, as well as how to diagnose it so that it can be treated after surgery. Similarly, particular emphasis is placed on preoperative preparation with regard to postoperative pain. Finally, various tools - techniques for monitoring the psychological mood of patients in pre-operative & post-operative stage (e.g. video, B-MEPS) were proposed.
