The role of the family in caring for people with diabetes mellitus
Summary:
Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a global scourge and is usually classified as a "family disease". The role of the family in caring for people with diabetes mellitus is of major importance, because it affects both the approval of the disease and quality of life. Family support as the main role of the family can act positively in the care for these individuals.
Aim: The purpose of this systematic review was to gather and analyze the studies that explored the role and especially the supporting role of the family in the care of people with mellitus diabetes.
Methodology: The present study is a systematic review of the literature. The literature was searched through the online bibliographic databases PubMed/Medline and Google Scholar with a publication date from 2000 onwards. The search terms used were: People with mellitus diabetes, Mellitus diabetes, Family*, Role of family, Supporting role of family, Care, Management. These search terms were performed in conjunction with the use of conjugates such as "OR" and "AND" on a case-by-case basis.
Results - Conclusions: The role of the family in caring for the member with diabetes mellitus can be supportive or unsupportive. This depends on how the affected member perceives it, and may vary according to gender, race, age or nationality. Usually, people with strong family support have better quality of life, better nutrition and metabolic indices, better adhere to their medication, and are more physically active than people whose families do not support them.
