Communicating the seamen's universe. Characteristics of seamanship and its dissemination in Bristol, 1702-1763
Summary:
The English maritime tradition runs through a number of different dynamics and dimensions to the present day. By widening the research focus, this essay attempts to construct a case study, examining Bristol, an area and a city which experienced its golden age at the beginning of the 18th century, during the formation of the British empire of the seas. Through the examination of Bristol during the period between 1702-1763, the topics and details of sailors on and off the ship, along with their networks will be viewed. This study will be conducted in relation to the existing literature but mainly through the examination of different sources that "communicated" the various aspects of the maritime world to society.
Through the recorded correspondence of the Royal Navy and Bristol authorities life on land will be thoroughly examined, while various diaries and notebooks of the time will highlight aspects of life at sea. Finally, in relation to these two interrelated aspects, the shaping of the maritime world at an imaginary level will be investigated. Pamphlets, newspapers as well as ballads will shed light on the rise of the maritime world, primarily with Bristol at its core, and secondarily past its county limits. Collectively, in these three interpretive scopes, I attempt to investigate in general the formation and characteristics of seafaring in a specific temporal and spatial context and relate them to the emergence of the British empire of the seas and its ideology.
