Summary:
This thesis focuses on the 39 alabastra and lekythoi associated with the Two-Row Painter, an early Classical Attic vase-painter whose work is dated back to the second quarter of the 5th century B.C. Although he was not a prolific vase-painter, the study of his work can potentially be beneficial for the archaeological research and enrich our general knowledge about the time and the area/s of his activity. In order to identify the vase-painter I used the classical method of J. Beazley, keeping in mind that we refer to an ‘invented persona’. The aim of this thesis is to collect and present the work of the Two-Row Painter, as well as to analyze it through the investigation of the adopted production process and the way in which those vases were perceived and used by their owners in antiquity.
Τhe structure of this thesis is as follows. The Introduction provides information regarding to the conventional name of the painter, the shapes of his vases, the female world iconography that he often chooses, the use of the vases, as well as their finding spots. Chapter I refers to the particular details regarding the date of the first appearance of the shapes of alabastron and lekythos in the Attic pottery workshops, as well as their evolution throughout time. Moreover it provides an extensive analysis regarding the shape of the painter’s vases. Chapter II examines the techniques and the style used by the vase-painter, as well as the secondary decorative motifs and the inscriptions used. Chapter III describes the way in which the audience/users perceive the picture of the vases, while attempts to analyze and interpret them. The final chapter offers concluding remarks. Then follows Catalogue I which includes the vases located in museums all over the world, and Catalogue II which includes the 14 vases which are kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens and I studied in person. The Appendix includes Tables containing pictures and drawings of the studied vases.
