Abstract:
Κανείς, στον βαθμό τουλάχιστον που διατηρεί έστω και ψήγματα (ηθικής) ευαισθησίας, δεν θα μπορούσε να συνταχθεί με την αντίληψη πως τα ζώα αποτελούν απλώς πράγματα, απέναντι στα οποία οποιαδήποτε ηθική στάση και συμπεριφορά δεν μπορεί παρά να είναι ηθικώς αδιάφορη – όπως, δηλαδή, ισχύει στην περίπτωση μιας πέτρας ή ενός κομματιού ξύλου. Ωστόσο, φαίνεται πως ενίοτε χρειαζόμαστε κάτι περισσότερο από την ηθική διαίσθηση ώστε να διαμορφώνουμε συγκροτημένες και σταθερές ηθικές στάσεις. Για τον λόγο αυτόν οι φιλόσοφοι έχουν αποδυθεί στον κοπιώδη αγώνα να επιλύσουν τον απαιτητικό γρίφο που αποκρυσταλλώνεται στο διττό ερώτημα: πώς οφείλω να μεταχειρίζομαι τα μη ανθρώπινα ζώα και γιατί;
