The presence and importance of serpentinite in Bronze Age Crete: qualifications, exploitation, products
Summary:
The object of this study is the stone serpentinite and its presence in Bronze Age Crete. It is a local stone, with many outcrops on the island, more extensively in the central and western-central part of it. It is a transparent stone and its colours range from grey-green to deeply black-green. It is classified among the soft stones and its texture is soapy and sometimes dusty. It was used by the early inhabitants of the island for the manufacture of stone objects, mainly vases. Its study in the present doctoral thesis is conducted in three parts. The first part (Part A) includes the distribution of the archaeological finds made of serpentinite in a number of sites, listed by kind of site, more specifically habitation, cult and burial sites. Its presence is also studied in workshops and, generally, places of stone object processing and manufacturing. It is particularly examined whether they depended or not on sources of the stone, as well as some workshops that specialized in serpentinite. Next, the study concentrates on the presence of serpentinite on two find categories: tools and architectural members. The exports of serpentinite objects from Crete to the Aegean are also examined: where to, what kind of items are exported etc. In the second part (Part B), the survey focuses on the archaeological site of Zakros and the serpentinite items found there. The raw materials and products from the palace, the settlement and sites in the wider area of Zakros are presented in detail, as is their distribution there. The material is also studied by places of discovery, by macroscopically determined categories of the stone and, finally, on the basis of their typology. The third part (Part C) includes a petrographic study of thin sections of geological samples collected from areas on the island which were considered sources of the stone, and of archaeological objects of serpentinite from Zakros. The objectives of the petrographic study were to identify the type of stone of the objects selected after the macroscopic examination and, subsequently, the localization of possible geological sources of the Zakros material, based on the geological samples collected. In addition, there is an attempt to outline the possible networks of the stone as a raw material from its sources on the island to its final destinations. The first volume of the thesis is accompanied by a second volume, that includes illustrative material, tables and appendices, which supplement the text. Among these are the catalogue of the Zakros serpentinite objects, with detailed information on each find and the appendices of the descriptions of the thin sections (of the geological samples and the archaeological objects).
