Summary:
This master's thesis is dealing with an approach to some traditions of Christmas: The carols, gnomes and the Christmas bread, through the design, implementation and evaluation of an education program for formal education. Specifically, it is an educational program for preschool children, which bases its themes on the above mentioned customs and on folk tales with gnomes. As elements of our folk tradition, the gnomes, the carols and the custom of Christmas bread can be the stimulus for a broader approach to it by young children. This can be done in the context of educational programs with a variety of activities. The present educational program was designed and implemented with the aim of enabling children to interact with our folk tradition in a playful and experiential way. This educational program was implemented in the area of Zografou in Athens, to children of the mixed department of infants and preschoolers of a private kindergarten, where the author was the appointed kindergarten teacher of the department. The project took place in December 2021 and was integrated into the school program during the 2 weeks before the school closed for the Christmas holidays. There were 15 children in the participating department, 8 girls and 7 boys. 6 of these were pre-schoolers and 9 were toddlers. The implementation of the educational programme was based on experiential and playful learning. The evaluation of the program showed that elements of cultural heritage can be exploited by using modern teaching methods, such as the project method, also in the context of formal education in Kindergarten classes.
