Summary:
This research examines the correlation of market value with competitive performance and investigates the efficiency of football clubs originating from the national associations of England, Spain, Italy, and Germany that participated in European club competitions (Champions League and Europa League). The seasons in question were from 2018/19 to 2020/21. The market value of the teams is the total of the individual market value of each player, which is an estimate of transfer fees—that is, prices that cοuld be paid for a football player’s transfer. The data was taken from the Transfermarkt website. For teams’ performance, data was taken from the organizing authority of European competitions, UEFA the (Union of European Football Associations) website, specifically the club coefficient ranking in the top two European competitions.
From the analysis of the quantitative data, it was found that the average market value of the teams was €576 million. The highest market value belongs to Manchester City with €1200 million, while the most efficient team is Sevilla since they collect 56.86 points per million Euros. A statistically significant positive correlation between market value and competitive performance was found, which over a three-year period was higher (r= 0.833) compared to the correlation per single season. This is proof that over time teams with the highest market value achieve the best performance.
