Summary:
The aim of this dissertation is the analysis of Immanuel Κant’s deontological ethics, focusing on the main concept of “duty” and “Categorical Imperative”, showing to each reader the transfer of ethical direction to the concept of “responsibility” of the other person, as Emmanuel Levinas mentioned in his theory. First of all, the concept of “will” is going to be presented and the doubt if that could mentioned as “free”. Furthermore, there will be a wide refer to the Kantian concept of “the kingdom of Ends”, as he conceived it in his works Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, Critique of Pure Reason – Transcendental Dialectic and Transcendental Methodology and Critique of Practical Reason. What is more, we will try to give an answer in the query if a subject can meet and get to know another person, without making him/her the same with himself/herself, without appropriating him/her, as part of the same wholeness. At this moment, Levinas gives his own explanation. So, in this paper we will be able to present the concept of “visage” and the distinction between the “other” and the “Other”, based on the interactions a subject has, being a part of the world. Finally, the concept of “freedom” will be declared, as well as the definition of “justice”, as they formulated in Levinas’s papers, Totalité et infini. Essay sur l’ extériorité, Liberté et commandement and Éthique et infini. After all, the aim of this paper is for the reader to understand the transfer of the ethical direction from a universal duty to a subjective turn towards the Other person, keeping unchanged the concept of freedom, which played a major role in both approaches.
