Animals in Shamanism: Symbolism and their role in shamanistic rituals of native tribes in Central and South America
Summary:
The aim of this paper is to showcase the substantial omnipresence of animals in shamanism, on a supernatural but also practical level. Animals have always served as symbols, guides, teachers and means during a shamanic ceremony, in order for the participants to achieve either physical or psychological treatment and cure. It is believed that this ancient realtion between humans and other animals is an archetypical one, as the primitive people percieved the world in such a way that defined their choices and beliefs.
Hundreds and thousands of tribes worldwide have been recorded as performing shamanistic rituals, however, we chose to focus on and delve into specific tribes in Central and South America so as to cover the partucular area in more detail, regarding the surroundings, notions ad beliefs of these tribes and their relation to animals during shamanistic ceremonies.
