DIETARY PROTEIN INTAKE AND STRENGTH IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE II DIABETES MELLITUS
Summary:
People with type 2 diabetes adjust their diet to regulate blood glucose levels. Dietary adjustments often lead to impaired protein intake associated with muscle mass growth.
The aim of this study was to correlate the effect of protein intake in people with type 2 diabetes with muscle strength production. The subjects were patients suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent subjects, n=11, age 56±5 years, 75±16 kg, 164±9 cm). Measurements included recording of diet for 3 days (one of them Saturday or Sunday), knee extension strength, handgrip strength and ten meters of walking. A significant difference in strength was observed in handgrip strength between men and women (37±7 and 24±4, respectively). Results showed no correlation between protein intake and knee joint extensor strength (r=0.517 p=0.104), handgrip strength (r=0.369 p=0.264) and 10m walk assessment (r=0.318 p=0.341). The findings of the study cannot support that protein intake alone can increase strength. Physical exercise combined with adequate protein intake appears to be the ideal combination for optimal results.
