Nurses attitudes and knowledge about the use of gloves during the covid-19 pandemic
Summary:
Introduction: At an international level, Nurses were on the front line to deal with the COVID19 pandemic and were the group most at risk from the disease. The use of surgical gloves
together with surgical masks were the most important protective measures against the SARSCoV-2 virus (Alao et all 2020).
Purpose:The purpose of the study was to evaluate the attitudes and knowledge of Nurses
regarding the use of gloves during the COVID-19 pandemic
Material – Method: The study was quantitative, descriptive. The studied population consisted
of one hundred (100) Nurses and Nurses' Assistants working in a Children's Hospital of Athens.
Simple random convenience sampling was used to select participants. The data collection was
carried out from March 2022 to May 2022 with a structured questionnaire that includes a total
of 27 questions divided into two subscales. The participation of Nurses and Nursing Assistants
in the study was voluntary and anonymous, and ethical principles and rules of conduct were
strictly observed. The statistical program SPSS 22 was used for the analysis.
Results: According to the results of the study, the average value of the score in the subscale of
the questionnaire that assessed the attitudes of Nurses and Nurse Assistants towards the use of
gloves during the pandemic was found to be 68.3% and in the subscale that assessed their
knowledge 83% In particular, regarding the evaluation of attitudes towards the use of gloves,
the majority of study participants, and more so those who worked in a COVID-19 clinic, wore
gloves during their daily clinical interventions as they felt protected and much less stressed. In
the evaluation of knowledge about the use of gloves, the majority of the sample, in a very large
percentage, knew that gloves must be changed from patient to patient, as well as knowing that
there were protocols to prevent the spread of infections in their workplace.
Conclusions: The more knowledge and clinical skills Nurses have, the more positive their
attitude towards proper glove management.
