EU Cohesion policy and private investment in Greece: a qualitative assessment
Summary:
This thesis examines the implementation of European Union Cohesion Policy in private investments in Greece, specifically in the programming period 2014 - 2020, during which the Cohesion Policy is the key policy of strengthening entrepreneurship, innovation and development. Cohesion Policy is crucial instrument of the European Union’s regional policy designed to promote equal economic opportunities and growth across all regions of the EU, with a particular focus on those regions that are lagging behind. Private investments, on the other hand, are essential for the economic development of any country. Greece, has long suffered from the two consecutive crises, slow economic growth and a lack of private investments, is a beneficiary of Cohesion Policy funding. Through an analysis of bibliography, official documents, and interviews with experts and stakeholders, this thesis explores the impact of Cohesion Policy on private investments in Greece. The thesis argues that Cohesion Policy funding has played a significant role in stimulating private investments in Greece, particularly in the fields of infrastructure, energy and digital transformation. However, the implementation of Cohesion Policy in Greece faces challenges such as bureaucratic obstacles, lack of coordination, and weak administrative capacities. The analysis concludes with policy recommendations for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of Cohesion Policy implementation in private investments in Greece.
