Summary:
The aim of this study is the examination of the acceptance or the rejection of the swear words in relation with specific contexts. Specifically, it is examined to what extent the attitude towards the use of the swear words is affected by the variables of 1) gender, 2) age and 3) the relationship between the speaker and the listener.
In order to investigate these issues, a combination of quantitative and qualitative research is used. The quantitative research includes the use of a questionnaire in order to find out the opinion of the wider population as far as the use of swear words by men, women and children is concerned. The qualitative research is chosen in order to find out the reasons beyond these opinions. At the same time, it is used in order to examine contexts where the use of a swear word is directed from the speaker to the listener and these two are bonded in a friendly way. In specific, the use of the word “malaka” as a friendly address is examined, since it is a very popular word in Greek society.
Eventually, the analysis concludes that, at first, part of the population rejects the use of swear words by women. Similarly, a bigger part of the population considers that children shouldn’t use swear words in any context. On the contrary, the use of swear words in contexts between friends seems totally acceptable.
