Family nursing and the system model: the case study of a family with child with psychiatric illness
Summary:
Introduction: The family nurse, through his multifaceted role, approaches the family, and using his skills organizes the appropriate care plan through specific processes in order to achieve the defined goals. He often uses theories and models to adopt a critical attitude and provide quality health care.

Purpose: The purpose of this review was to present the value and goals of family nursing and its relationship with Betty Neuman's Systems Model as well as to apply the Systems Model to the family environment through a case study.

Results/Case Study Presentation: The Betty Neuman systems model analyzes the management of health needs through a holistic approach. The family is considered as an open system with two important concepts: stress and reaction to it. A stressful stimulus disrupts system balance and activates the system by producing energy, in order to adapt and restore balance by interventions of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. The case study concerns a family of five members that has to manage a child with mental illness while facing several problems both between its members and its wider environment. The main difficulty between family members is the lack of communication. The use of the Betty’s Neuman system model contributes in understand family problems as a system, while at the same time guiding nursing practice to help the family manage its problems.

Conclusions: Betty’s Neuman system model is widely used in nursing clinical practice. The value of its application in family nursing is important, as the nurse during his/her evaluation and intervention involves all family members, records the pressure factors, activates and strengthens the entire family system, in order to achieve balance and well-being.
