Professional concerns of adapted physical activity graduates. The role of adaptability in the contemporary labour market.
Summary:
The professional concerns of physical education graduates from the School of Physical Education and Sport Science are related with several practical issues, associated with their job-related concerns and their respected career development. In the contemporary labour market new aspects are revealed which are related either with problems and fears or to opportunities for skill upgrading and readjustment of occupational goals. In view of the ongoing rapid developments, the current study was designed to: a) determine the professional concerns, b) evaluate the career adaptability and c) detect the fear of Covid-19 and its relationship with the career adaptability of physical education graduates in the field of Adapted Physical Activity (APA).
A mixed research method was used for data collection. The quantitative data was collected from the responses in the career adaptability scale and the fear of Covid-19 scale, in a sample of 174 graduates from the School of Physical Education and Sport Science. The qualitative data was originated from semistructured interviews to six graduates from the School of Physical Education and Sport Science with a specialization in APA. The SPSS was used to analyze the quantitative data, using Cronbach alpha, Intraclass Reliability Coefficie nts, univariate and multivariate analyses (MANOVAs, ANOVAs). A content analysis and an organised category system was developed for the qualitative data analysis.
Regarding the quantitative results, the Cronbach alpha coefficients of internal consistency ranged from α= .817 to .855. The results from the exploratory factor analysis were in line with the literature, verifying the 4 CAAS factors (concern, control, curiosity, confidence). The multivariate analyses of variance, with respect to the demographic variables, revealed no differences in career adaptability, apart from graduate studies. The responses in the FVC-19S scale were not significantly associated with the demographic variables assessed and the 4 CAAS factors. Regarding the qualitative results, the content analysis revealed 5 categories with a total of 24 entries. The qualitative data underlined the aspects of the professional concerns related to environmental and intra-individual factors, both before and during the pandemic. In addition, separate sectors of the labour market were identified, which were necessary for the preparation of future physical education and sport science graduates. Future university curriculum may need to consider the above findings to strengthen the quality of their programs and prepare graduates for more effective integration in the labour market.
