Summary:
The aim of the present case study was the implementation and the evaluation of the
effectiveness of differentiated instruction on a student with autism spectrum disorder who was
attending the sixth grade of a mainstream primary school during the school year 2021-2022. In
addition, the aim of this study was to evaluate the teaching strategies and methods that can be
employed to differentiate effectively the instruction and learning environment, and address the
learning difficulties of the above student. During the implementation of this differentiated
instruction another goal was to enhance the cooperation and the application of co-teaching
between the parallel support teacher and the general education teacher, so that the student with
Autism Spectrum Disorder to be included more effectively in the class and school context. The
research material used consisted of protocols assessing ASD pupil’s educational needs,
protocols of structured observation to monitor the student’s educational and psychosocial
progress. In addition at the beginning and at the end of this intervention semi-structured
interviews were applied to student’s parent and teacher. Finally, differentiated teaching
material was created, based on the principles of differentiated instruction and adjusted to the
student’s learning needs. With the application of differentiated instruction were confirmed
meaningful results both for the strengthening of understanding, the cultivation of written
language, the active participation and the strengthening of the self-esteem of the participating
student, as well as for the creation of an inclusive and cooperative classroom environment.
