Human rights education in primary school using digital games: The refugee issue
Summary:
The subject of this paper is the alternative teaching on human rights and specifically on the refugee issue using digital games for 6th grade students.
Firstly, the refugee issue is examined and international law is briefly mentioned as well as the regional laws based on which the basic rights of refugees are determined. The following are the definitions extracted from the institutions and laws. According to them, a refugee is a person who is outside his country of origin as he runs an objective risk of persecution. The countries of settlement of the refugees have specific responsibilities, but the refugees themselves have, in addition to rights, certain obligations towards the countries of destination.
Then, reference is made to education and training in human rights and citizenship. It is clear that in today's globalized and multicultural society the need for human rights and citizenship education is imperative. Nevertheless, the lack of a specific legal framework and curricula leads mainly to fragmented and individual efforts of specific teachers.
The literature review closes with a brief reference to game-based learning with an emphasis on digital games. The introduction of digital games in education is an important field of interest in modern pedagogy. Digital games as an alternative tool for presenting and evaluating new knowledge have been extensively researched in recent decades and it is now accepted that their use can have a positive effect both on the cognitive level of students and on the degree of fun, involvement and cooperation during the teaching process.
The second part presents the design and implementation of two educational interventions for 6th grade students. One was designed using the digital games 360° Greek City and Roblox, as means of improving knowledge on the refugee issue, and the second using the traditional teaching methods. Then, an analytical evaluation and comparison of the cognitive results as well as the involvement and well-being of the students is attempted. Finally, it is concluded that the use of digital games for the teaching of subjects related to human rights to 6th grade students does not seem to significantly enhance their cognitive level in comparison to traditional methods but to affect the levels of involvement, well-being and interaction. Of course, the systematic engagement of students with digital games as well as the increased level of involvement and well-being that the playful process ensures can lead under certain conditions to a deeper knowledge of difficult concepts, such as the refugee issue.
