Construction of identity of perpetrator by internet users. Case study: feminicide in Folegandros
Summary:
The present thesis is carried out within the framework of the Master's Programme "Linguistics". The aim is to examine the way in which the identity of the perpetrator of a gender crime, more specifically femicide, is constructed by users of the online platform Facebook. For the needs of the study, data were collected from the pages of three newspapers (Proto Thema, Ta Nea, Ethnos), which are comments of the platform users on the news articles that covered the case of the femicide of Garifallia Psarakou in Folegandros. The analysis carried out is qualitative and based on the five principles (Emergence, Positioning, Persuasion, Relationality, Distractibility) of Bucholtz & Hall's (2004) theoretical model of identity construction. It is found that all five principles emerge in the contributions of the speakers, with the most predominant ones being those of Persuasion, Positioning and Relationality, while the principle of Detachment permeates almost all of the comments. Auxiliary to identity construction, linguistic acts function as a tool for the principle of Demonstration (Searle, 1969). In summary, the major conclusions drawn are that each user illuminates an aspect of the perpetrator's identity in his or her contribution, without necessarily agreeing except in terms of the identity of the killer (but not the woman-killer). The majority of users either directly or indirectly acknowledge that the perpetrator inherently carries this characteristic and attribute responsibility for preventing or controlling this type of crime to external factors (e.g. legislative framework, social perceptions, etc.).
