Original Title:
Μεταηθική και ηθική του Franz Brentano
Translated title:
Metaethics and ethics by Franz Brentano
Summary:
This thesis look at the ethical and metaethical thought of the German philosopher Franz Brentano (1838-1917). The discussion of the philosopher's positions will be based on his two main texts on ethics, On the Origin of Moral Knowledge (Vom Ursprung sittlicher Erkenntnis, 1934) and his lectures on the Foundation and Construction of Ethics (Grundlegung und Aufbau der Ethik , 1952). The first part of the thesis includes a brief biographical sketch and a reference to Brentano's influence on philosophy. The publishing history of works above is also discussed. The second part deal with the philosopher's metaethical thought in detail : the question of moral knowledge and truth, the ways of understanding moral consciousness and the texture of moral judgment. This part ends with the attempt of metaethical positioning of the philosopher as a moral realist and as an intuitionist. The third part presents the Brentanian analysis of the highest practical good, which constitutes a utilitarian ethics with a peculiar 'categorical imperative'. The realization of the individual moral commands according to Brentano closes the third part. The fourth part look at the reception and evaluation of Brentano's metaethical thought by G.E. Moore. The thesis ends with a fifth part that situates Brentano's metaethics in the contemporary metaethical debate and phenomenological ethics, also proposing research questions.
