Parental involvement investigated through the encounters of a Parent School
Summary:
The current study aims to investigate the social assumptions of parental involvement. Therefore, transcribed conversations of a Parent School were used as research data. The participants in this School were parents of children of a private school at the region of Attica, and the well-known psychoanalyst and psychiatrist Athanasios Alexandridis, as a coordinator. These conversations have already been published by A. Alexandridis, within two volumes. The encounters of the Parent School actualized in order to be discussed issues about children, such as school adjustment and the family functioning in general. At the present study, it was investigated the type of parental involvement, through the discourse of the coordinator and the practices of involvement, through parents’ aspect. The contributions between participants and the coordinator were also investigated. These data were analyzed in terms of thematic analysis. Results showed that a main characteristic of parental involvement is a personalized approach and a form of child-centered education and rearing. Within the discourse of parents, their parenting practices were emerged. Moreover, they were emerged parenting practices, as they were understood through the perspective and the discourse of the coordinator. Furthermore, points of interaction between the participants and the moderator are discussed, as well as counseling issues, in context of parents’ counseling in this Parent School. The assumptions of the parental involvement, as well as general conclusions, are discussed below.
