The depiction of built public space in Attic vase-painting of the Archaic and Classical Period
Summary:
The present thesis examines the way in which built public space is depicted in Attic vase-painting of the Archaic and Classical period. Specifically, the thesis focuses on the buildings of public character that are most frequently depicted in Attic vase-painting, namely fountains, temples and other religious buildings, as well as city walls. Through the study of a total of 210 representations and using as a methodological background mainly the iconographic/iconological approach, a thorough synthetic overview of the way in which the aforementioned types of buildings are depicted on Attic black-figure, red-figure and white-ground vases of the Archaic and Classical period is attempted. The representations are divided into iconographic groups/categories according to the way in which the buildings are depicted and their architectural form, while within each category further distinctions are made according to the subjects of the representations. Based on the above-mentioned classifications, the main body of the thesis analyses the architectural form of the public buildings depicted, in combination with a detailed presentation of the thematic framework within which they are depicted, since the latter very often contributes decisively to the interpretation of the former. The thesis aims to draw conclusions concerning the ways in which Attic vase-painters choose to approach and depict the above-mentioned types of buildings, the relationship between the depicted built space and real architecture as well as the important role played by the ‘hand’ of the vase-painter, taking into account from the outset the assumption that vase-paintings are not photographs and that they are always determined by limitations related to the manufacture material, the shape, the use and the decoration technique of the objects bearing them, i.e. the vases. The main body of the thesis begins with the introduction, then it is divided into three parts, which are dedicated to the examination of each of the three types of buildings and ends with the final conclusions chapter.
