Teaching Philosophy through Film
Summary:
The present thesis deals with the possibility of drawing on Cinema as an auxiliary medium for teaching introductory philosophy subjects in the context of secondary education. The work is divided into two main parts. In the first, a discussion of the ways in which a film can promote philosophical thought highlights the theoretical parameters of this coupling. It is argued that the presentation of abstract and sometimes difficult philosophical ideas through image and sound, the use of films as thought experiments, and, at the same time, the emotional involvement of viewers, contribute to the receptivity to philosophical questioning by facilitating the goal of philosophical reflection and philosophical reasoning. After mentioning - and rebutting- objections to the use of cinema in the study of philosophy, more specific methodological proposals are provided for the practical integration of films into the philosophy course in the Greek school reality of today's Lyceum.

In the second and more extensive part of the thesis, several examples from international cinema are provided. They are analyzed in relation to philosophical issues, arranged in a systematic order, according to the existing curriculum. The films could be characterized as "philosophical" either because their content rests entirely on some philosophical ideas or because they indirectly address particular philosophical problems. They are submitted in support of our claim that Cinema can philosophize by "showing" in an understandable and demonstrative way what Philosophy states and sustains through logical argument. Moreover, at the beginning of each chapter, a kind of introduction to the corresponding philosophical issues is proposed, so that the thesis can be used for teaching purposes at the Lyceum.
