Parody in Boeotian art during the archaic and classical period. Iconographical and anthropological approach
Summary:
With this thesis, the boeotian iconographical humor of the archaic and classical times is examined in its entirety. Its function with Bakhtin's carnival theory allows a deeper understanding of it from an anthropological point of view as well. This osmosis, original for the classical archaeology, also unites the link between the comastic tradition and the kabiric figures, which were generally and vaguely considered to be related. The character and technical elements of the kabiric workshops are delineated through new to the research allusions and attributions. New additions of vases to the long list of the kabiric ones demonstrate that the workshop of the Kabiros painter used many techniques, such as the red-figure, the Six and the silhouette, while until now it was believed that only the black-figure and partially the silhouette possessed and applied. Depictions questioned for their authenticity are analyzed iconographically and proved to be ancient. For the first time in the research of boeotian vases and figurines, fairy-tale motifs are recorded. These, along with the Bakhtinian theory, contribute to the definition of the youth-related cultic rites of the Kabirion of Thebes, in which, as never before, it is proposed with valid arguments that the mythical ancestors played an important role. The extensive parallelism between kabiric and attic on choes depictions confirms the relationship between the two, known from earlier studies, which indicates the kinship of the Kabirion and attic Anthesteria festivals. With the iconographical examination of the kabiric vases and figurines, found in the sanctuary, answers are also given regarding whether there were mystical and theatrical events in the Kabirion during the classical period.
