Summary:
The demand for Greece to find its rightful place in relation to its ancient tradition, to maintain a stance towards its grave past, is imperative in the circles of artists – writers and visual artists – of the generation of the ’30s. In a period such as that of the interwar period, when there is an upsurge in research on antiquities (with the successive excavations, the organization of museums, the convergence of archaeological conferences, the publication of scientific books) Greek artists turn to the sources with the intention of entering into a dialogue with antiquity and rediscover it, aesthetically and intuitively, beyond the idealized standards handed down to them by the Renaissance, being convinced that the redefinition of their relationship with the Great Past was the answer to their own search for identity.
This doctoral thesis investigates the uses of material antiquity in the work of six of the most important poets of the generation of the ’30s, George Seferis, Odysseus Elytis, Yannis Ritsos, Nicolas Calas, Andreas Embirikos and Nikos Engonopoulos. The whole of their poetic production is examined, in a time range starting from the 1930s and reaching in some cases up to the 1990s, while alongside the literary texts their extra-literary texts (essays, reviews, diaries, correspondence) are also used, as well as unpublished material from their Archive, in order to illuminate all aspects of their complex relationship with antiquity.
