Studies on the eating habits of first school age children in Greece
Summary:
Objective: Through the present thesis, studies addressing the eating habits of early school age students in Greece for the last 30 years were collected and reviewed. The aim was to investigate whether any progress has been made in this area.
Methodology: A total of 24 studies were reviewed, involving approximately 154,593 children attending various educational institutions across Greece, both in kindergartens and nurseries and in primary schools. Therefore, a wide range of learners was covered, sometimes small in number and sometimes large. In order to achieve the objective, a multitude of factors had to be investigated in the studies, both the optimistic eating habits and those that were found to be incompatible with the Mediterranean Diet. Since the studies as a whole referred to the Mediterranean Diet, it was only natural that this would be the main canvas on which the conclusions of this thesis would be drawn.
Results: Through the review of the 24 studies and their results, it was found that the dietary habits of the first school-age students in Greece during the last 30 years are not so compliant with the Mediterranean Diet. However, several dietary elements of the Mediterranean diet such as regular consumption of vegetables, fruits, legumes, olive oil seemed to have been maintained. Finally, however, the volume of studies referring to the consumption of sweet foods, soft drinks, fast food and other foods not compatible with the MD was high.
