Parents' needs during the hospitalization of a child in a paediatric intensive care unit(PICU): a systematic review
Summary:
Introduction: Children admission of to the PICU is a painful experience for parents. All too often, they are asked to make important decisions about treatment options in collaboration with the care team, which causes them anxiety, uncertainty and psychological trauma.
Aim: The aim of the present systematic review was to investigate the needs of the parents during the child's hospitalization in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
Material and Method: A systematic literature review in international databases (Pubmed, Cinahl, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library) was performed. A time limited criteria was applied with respect to the publication of articles (articles published in the last 15 years).
Results:Nine articles were found that met the criteria for participation in the review.From the thematic analysis of the results, the following sections emerged: A: Need for information from health professionals regarding the child's health status, but also the possible treatment options available, B: Need for psychological support from health professionals (psychologists, nurses, doctors) in order to be able to manage the difficult situation they experience due to the hospitalization of their child, but also to be able to manage their mourning and grief in the event of the loss of the child., C: Need for safe hospitalization of the child.
Conclusions: Parents have needs during their child's hospitalization in the PICU, which if they are put within limits and directed by the health professionals (who are possessed of knowledge and composure in difficult times) it will be possible for the child's health to progress smoothly child during his hospitalization.
