The use of Twitter by Greek sports journalists and their role in the era of social media
Summary:
Social media have altered the way people communicate, as they enable them to bypass traditional media and address their messages directly to the public. Sports stakeholders are no exception to this, as athletes, teams and organizations are no longer in need of journalists in order to reach their audience. At the same time, fans have taken advantage of the tools available to them and produce their own content in the form of tweets, posts, blogs, videos or podcasts challenging the role of sports journalists as gatekeepers and disseminators of information. Notwithstanding these challenges, sports journalists have embraced social media and have integrated them into their daily working routine in various ways, as they can help them do their job better and more easily. This thesis examines the ways sports journalists in Greece use Twitter, the changes social media have brought in their daily working routines and how they perceive their role in the age of social media. In order to answer these questions, content analysis has been performed in a sample of 890 tweets from 15 Greek sport journalists and semi-structured interviews have been conducted with five of them. The theoretical background of communication, sports journalism and new media is cited, as well as the findings of similar studies carried out in Europe, America, Asia and Australia in order to detect similarities and differences.
