Summary:
AIM
Τhe evaluation of the incidence of specific maxillary sinus anatomical variations and pathology and their correlation to patients’ age and gender of CBCT scans made for various indications.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
We will analyze 660 CBCT scans (1320 sinuses) of adult patients involving both sinuses to their full extent performed at our Department between 2018 and 2022. CBCT scans of patients with genetic syndromes, cleft palate, general diseases affecting the size of sinuses, history of injury or surgical intervention in the region of interest and artifacts degradating the image quality will be excluded. The following anatomical variations and pathologic findings will be assessed from a panel of three experts in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiolody: antral septa, posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA), sinus hypoplasia, sinusitis, odontogenic cysts, retention cysts, dystrophic calcifications and various less common entities (fungal infection, benign fibroosseous dysplastic entities, neoplasms etc.).
RESULTS
Our preliminary results based on 241 CBCT scans (482 sinuses) showed that antral septa were present in 24,27% of sinuses. PSAA was identifiable in 72,6% of sinuses with a mean distance of 7,2 mm from the floor of the sinus. 2,49% of sinuses were hypoplastic, 10,17% presented sinusitis, 2% odontogenic cysts, 11,83% retention cysts, 6,22% dystrophic calcifications and 1,87% more uncommon entities like malignant neoplasms, fungal infection and fibrous dysplasia.
CONCLUSION
Maxillary sinuses present a wide spectrum of anatomical variations and pathology. CBCT is a diagnostic tool of great importance in the identification of the aforementioned findings especially prior to any surgical intervention in the area.
