Themes in grammar of conversational discourse in Greek: Corpus analysis of na (να), pu (που), oti/pos (ότι/πως)
Summary:
The dissertation aims at studying the grammatical markers να (na), που (pu), ότι (óti) and πως (pos) in spontaneous conversations. The predominant reliance of linguistic studies and grammars of Modern Greek on written discourse suggests the necessity of examining the field of spoken language. Although the grammatical markers studied have consistently gathered the interest of researchers in recent decades, their study in spoken discourse is absent. This dissertation aims at filling this gap by focusing on the description of their syntactic, semantic and pragmatic characteristics and the comparison between them, while engaging in dialogue with previous linguistic research.
For the purposes of research, a corpus of approximately 127,000 words of spontaneous conversations has been created. Analysis was based on the methodology of Corpus Linguistics, with recourse to notions from Conversation Analysis, with a view to quantitatively analyze and qualitatively identify the typical use and structures of these markers.
Data analysis has identified the frequency of use, the typical patterns and structures, as well as the function of these markers in spontaneous spoken discourse, contributing to the formulation of hypotheses regarding their unique characteristics. It is argued that να carries the semantic feature of temporality and formulates a non-temporally bounded span with the verb; που is a definite, propositional marker that conveys mutual knowledge or the assessment of mutual knowledge and can be distinguished into a specifying and a non-specifying που; ότι is an epistemic marker that carries the core information of the utterance and is commented upon regarding its truth value, which may range from the implicature of falsehood to factivity; finally, πως shares the same characteristics with ότι, but differs in terms of overall frequency, collocation frequency with specific dependent verbs and frequency of distribution within specific co-textual frames.
The findings and hypotheses of this dissertation can contribute to the study of spoken discourse, and more specifically to the grammar of spontaneous conversations, and can provide insights about the nature of these four grammatical markers, contributing to their description in the related literature.
