Dimensions of the educational material that function as a scaffold in the teaching of Greek as a second language
Summary:
The present paper aims to investigate the perceptions of teachers who serve in Primary Education as well as in Secondary Education regarding the effectiveness and applicability of the supporting educational material produced by the researcher in order to assist the teaching of the Greek language as a second language both in the Classrooms Reception as well as in 'normal' classes, using the English language as scaffolding so that a bridge of communication is created between the teacher and the students. The research involved qualitative methods of data collection and analysis. From the answers that were obtained from the interviews with the teachers of the present research, interesting data were extracted regarding the teachers' perceptions on the effectiveness, applicability and necessity of the present material and also about the practices they adopt when teaching Greek as a second language. The majority of these teachers choose to use technological means and practices such as the use of digital slides (PPT), the use of the English language or another foreign language as scaffolding in order for the teachers to communicate with the students as well as to make the student’s participation in the class more active. Also, all the teachers who participated in the research would integrate
this educational material into their lesson planning when teaching Greek as a second language both in Reception Classes and in 'regular' classrooms. Finally, the teachers suggested ways to improve the material presented to them in order for the best possible effectiveness of the material to be achieved.
