The creation and symbolisation of student's cognitive fields throught meaning making processes via multiple semiotic systems: Scientific Meaning through Multiple Rerpresentations
Summary:
This doctoral thesis studies the mental mechanisms formed by students to understand scientific concepts and whether multiple semiotic systems facilitate the representation of scientific concepts.Specifically, this research study focuses on how a student constructs cognitive schemas through semiotic resources, organizes them in a broader mental framework, and constructs cognitive fields. The research attempts to study which combination of semiotic systems is more effective than others and in what order can the students use them in irder to understand scientific concepts. The present study takes into consideration that the proposed theoretical model can be applied to any subject area.At this way, aspects of the learning process are mentioned, as different semiotic systems are combined and students' knowledge construction processes are recorded. The results of the research show that: a/ the verbal system of representation remains dominant and necessary for the understanding of scientific concepts. However, the student seems to have difficulty on understanding all the elements of verbal representations at the conscious and symbolic level, so verbal representations help in understanding concepts but not in the interpretion of the scientific notions and meaning making processes. b/ the visual representations help the student to formalize the scientific concepts and act at an abstract level. They enhance the cognitive skills of coding, but they do not build new knowledge by themselves. c/ Students seem to have difficulty on identifying the processes they follow to understand scientific concepts, d/ Visual representations are more helpful in teaching specific concepts and help students identify the cognitive processes they follow.e/ Students seem to prefer visual semiotic systems first and then their verbal explanations as verbal texts, as visual semiotic resources are more abstract forms but allow students to think more deeply as they activate higher cognitive processes.
