The relationship between dietary habits and arterial functional properties. Results from the Corinthian study.
Summary:
Background:Dietary habits have an impact on arterial elastic properties
Methods:
Aim: The influence of the dietary habits of the population of Corinth on the functional principles of the arteries and how these correlates with pulse wave velocity (PWV).
The volunteers completed a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), which included the consumption of whole grain bread (Group I) or not (Group II). In addition, carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (C-F PWV) was noninvasively measured with Sphygmocor (AtCor Medical).
Results:Among 1970volunteers,1534had good quality C-F PWV measurements and consumed bread. Among them 516 persons consumed whole grain bread (group I: 62 ±11 years) and 1018who did not consumewhole grain (group II: 64± 12 years). These subjects were younger in age and had lower C-F PWV values (group I 9.04 ± 2.93 m/sec, group II 9.57 ± 2.76 m /sec, p=0.01). Whole grain bread consumption was an independent predictor of C-F PWV (b=-0.335, 95% CI, -0,609, -0.061, p=0.017).

Conclusion:The consumption of whole grain bread has a beneficial effect on arterial stiffness as measured by pulse wave velocity, which may contribute to the improvement of cardiovascular health.
