Study of the efficacy of opening the Lillequist membrane during endoscopic third ventriculostomy

The object of this MSc thesis is the study of the effectiveness of opening Lillequist's membrane in 71 patients who were hospitalized at the Neurosurgery Clinic of the Athens General Hospital "G. Gennimatas" due to hydrocephalus and treated surgically with endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) during the five-year period February 2018 - January 2023. In particular, the present thesis seeks to examine the possible differentiation in terms of the results of endoscopic third ventriculostomy in relation to size or absence of Lillequist's membrane opening. To draw the conclusions, the walking speed of the patients, the maximum width of the third ventricle and the Evans index before the surgery and three months after are taken into account.
The material of the study was the most recent international bibliography, data from the files of the patients who underwent endoscopic third ventriculostomy at the Neurosurgery Clinic of G.N.A. “G. Gennimatas” during the five-year period February 2018 - January 2023, as well as from their reassessment at the Outpatient Clinics.
Based on the findings, it is concluded that both the imaging parameters (3rd ventricle width, Evans index) and the clinical parameter measured (time to walk a distance of ten meters) improved proportionally more in the Lillequist membrane opened patient groups and the improvement was greater when the opening of Lillequist's membrane exceeded five millimeters.
