Summary:
This paper deals with the issue of the policies that were implemented and are being implemented, at the European and national level, for the integration of women in the labor market and the promotion of female employment. Initially, in the first part, a theoretical approach to the dominant concerns regarding women's work is attempted. Women have always faced difficulties both in accessing and remaining in employment. These difficulties arise mainly from the gender discrimination suffered by women in the labor market, but also from the gradual evolution of these into gender inequalities, resulting in the prevalence of the gap between female and male employment. Since its inception, the European Union has aimed to promote gender equality in employment and to strengthen women's work. Greece, in turn, followed the European approaches to the issue of women's inclusion in employment and incorporated them into the Greek reality. Therefore, in the second part of the paper, the policies of the European Union and Greece, as reflected in legislation, presidential decrees, European directives, action plans and European and national guidelines, for the integration of women in employment and the achievement of gender equality at work are examined. Finally, some data on female employment in Greece today, compared to other European countries, are presented and the corresponding conclusions are drawn.
