Summary:
Alcohol is an addictive substance, where its uncontrolled use and misuse seems to be associated with a lot of personal, social, medical and economic problems. The factors that lead to alcohol dependence and the problems arising from the over drinking complete the description of a social phenomenon, which the resolution is considered a very important matter. Various strategies have been used for the treatment of alcohol addiction, but they are not sufficiently effective. Research has now turned to new methods of treating alcoholism and related disorders and one of them is thru physical exercise.
This paper, based on a review of the current literature, aims to investigate the role of exercise and how it affects alcohol addiction. The results of the research showed, despite the lack of relevant studies, that the implementation of coordinated exercise programs can bring about an improvement in the physical condition of the alcoholic, improving his cardiorespiratory capacity and reducing body fat, but also shows positive results in mental disorders such as the anxiety and depression that commonly accompany alcoholism. Despite the limited literature on the relationship between exercise, alcohol treatment, and the endogenous opioid system, physical activity appears to be an additional strategy for coping with alcoholism and a healthier every day life.
