The need for nursing staff training in crisis management after the Covid-19 pandemic
Summary:
Introduction-Background: A health crisis like that of the Covid-19 pandemic created great upheaval in health systems. Special emphasis is placed around the world on the training of health workers in the preparedness and response to such crises and disasters, so that there is as little loss of human life as possible. Aim: The aim of this paper is to synthesize, through a systemic literature review, the educational framework of crises and disaster management for nurses in hospitals. Methodology: Systematic review. Only research and papers involving working nurses, published in the last 5 years and their full text is available in the English and Greek languages, in the databases PubMed, Google Scholar & ScienceDirect, were included. The recording and analyses were based on the PRISMA 2009 method. Results: Twelve relevant studies were identified which deliberately addressed the context of responding to a health crise and some covered the topic of disasters and included different types of studies. All had in common the training and how it improves knowledge and practices according to the collection of studies. There are existing limitations in the present study : The non-homogeneity of the studies on how the research was conducted, the inclusion in the sample other than nurses and in some the small sample size not allowing to generalize the results. Conclusions: Through the present study, the need for further research into effective ways of training in hospitals in crisis management emerged. Continuing education inside and outside hospitals can better prepare nurses to crisis response. Interactive training must be investigated so that it can be better adapted to the needs of employees and include all personnel at a lower cost so that it can be carried out at regular intervals. Training, communication skills and the assignment of specific roles that will alternate between the participants must be promoted. The operational plans must be communicated to all staff, on which the training must also take place and be appropriately adapted to each health organization.
