Power relations in the school environment
Summary:
The school unit is a space where interaction relationships are developed both between teachers and children and between the Teachers' Association and the principal. In many cases the principal handles the power he has in such a way that sometimes he contributes to the creation of a positive climate in the school area and other times the opposite. In this research, the way in which the principal exercises control over the teachers working in his school regarding their teaching and work duties was investigated. More specifically, the researcher investigated the sanctions that principals usually impose on teachers who do not perform their duties properly, as well as the rewards they give to teachers who do better. Most principals claimed that they very often reward their teachers through leave, verbal encouragement, or mentioning a teacher as an example to other teaching staff and students in the school. Nevertheless, there were not a few who admitted that they have had to make reprehensions to teachers, but refrained from imposing sanctions as it is considered by most as an extreme solution. It was also investigated for what reasons a principal rewards or scolds the teachers working in his school. Regarding the awards, most principals mentioned as reasons the teachers' initiatives, innovative actions in school everyday life and crisis management in the classroom. Instead, reprehensions have been made both for pedagogical reasons (eg poor classroom management) and for service reasons (eg tardiness). Finally, it was examined whether the Teachers' Association, as an institutional and administrative body of the school, is able to control the principal regarding his duties and, if not, by whom the principal of a school unit is controlled. The participants argued that the Teachers' Association can and should control the work of the principal of a school who, however, is controlled by the entire school community (students, parents, teachers, Primary Education, School Counselor).
