The concept of play in the understanding of human becoming with an emphasis on Platonic-Aristotelian philosophy of education
Summary:
This philosophical thesis aims to research the concept of play as a determining factor in the development of human personality, as well as to present a theory of the play that is closely intertwined with the evolution of the social life in the ancient Greek philosophy. In the process of my research to decide on the final form of my thesis, I also addressed the topic of the play in the academic research of the 20th century, mainly under the influence of Huizinga's Homo Ludens.
The oppositional seriousness/play dichotomy – where according to Huizinga authentic seriousness necessarily has something playful but also authentic play is played with seriousness – produces a reference to Heraclitus' first attempted philosophical system (presented in passage 22DK52 as an important given about the play).
The above-mentioned emphasis on the importance of the Heracleian passage 52DK in combination with its references to Plato's Laws, in Aristotle's Politics I, and also in D8 of the Nicomachean Ethics, constitute the dominant topic of the research. According to the emergence of 52DK which mediates decisively in the methodology of decoding the concept of play in the relevant passages of Aristotle, we hope to come to illuminate the existence of a whole theory of play that develops among Heraclitus, Plato and Aristotle.
The wealth of findings identified in the work of Plato and Aristotle do not simply retain an interest exclusively in the field of the history of ideas, but are presented as timeless values that can offer a wealth of evidence to redefine the meaning of education and educational practice, against the crisis faced by the relevant sectors in the 21st century.
Regarding the actual context of classical philosophy between Plato and Aristotle (with a decisive mediation of a Heracleian influence) education was examined in the dialogue between political and moral philosophy and was even placed at the foundations and the culmination of the relevant searches, with the play being an enigmatic catalyst for this leading role of education. This riddle we are asked to answer.
