The Museum of Pathology of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens: its contribution to the educational process of undergraduate medical students, and postgraduate environmental health students
Summary:
The contribution of museums to the educational process and engagement with the sciences has been proven to be beneficial for both students and teachers. Specifically, for medical museums, students’ interaction with the exhibits can improve their observational skills, provide them with new knowledge, and cultivate their empathy. Furthermore, a significant characteristic of many museum exhibits is their connection to environmental health, either because they bear the imprint of environmental impact on health or because they can be utilized as biomarkers for studies related to the long-term evolution of pollution and its effects on health. In the Museum of Pathology at the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece), there are pathological preparations related to potential environmental impacts, which were recorded and utilized in the context of the study. For the needs of the study, a structured questionnaire was created and distributed to undergraduate students of the Medical School and to postgraduate students of a master program related to environmental health. According to their opinion, students’ interaction with the museum’s specimens contributes to the development of their knowledge and observational skills, as well as their awareness and empathy regarding certain diseases and their effects on the human body. The peculiarities of the space and especially the need for corrective and aesthetic interventions were noted by the students, who also proposed solutions that, in their opinion, would improve the overall image of the Museum. Furthermore, the students recognize the environmental footprint of the Museum and believe that the Museum of Pathology can indeed serve as an educational space for environmental health and raise awareness among the public about issues related to environmental impacts on health. Additionally, the students acknowledge that the old specimens can serve as subjects of study for contemporary researchers, using new molecular and genetic testing techniques. Finally, non-medical information accompanying certain exhibits interests the students, who believe that such information should be preserved.
