The role of the audience in the musical performative happening: The case of the hip hop concert
Summary:
The object of this present thesis is the study of the role of the audience within the musical performative happening and, more specifically, the hip hop concert, from the perspective of performance theory. For the purposes of the thesis, bibliographical research was held, with reference to the disciplines of Anthropology, Ethnomusicology, Sociology, Theatrology, Communication and African American studies, with performance studies as a point of convergence, as well as fieldwork in underground hip hop concerts, through participant observation and conducting interviews. The main interests of this research involve the relationship between performer and audience and the manner in which the audience performs its role, the ways in which it becomes affected by the transformative quality of performance and how it places itself in the performative happening as a group, as well as the experience of the musical performance. Finally, by focusing on hip hop, I discuss its function as a field of action for the audience and the expression of the audience’s performativity in the live concert. The aspiration of this thesis is to showcase the importance of the audience as an integral part of performance, as a potential performer and co-creator of the meaning of performance, and also to suggest an alternative approach of the performance phenomenon, which does not detect performativity strictly in the case of on-stage performers.
