From Islamabad to Athens and back: Challenges of managing migration flows and issues of labour integration and social exclusion of migrants from Pakistan in Greece
Summary:
Theoretical Background: From 2000 onwards, it has been observed that Greece has been receiving large inflows of Third Country Nationals (TCNs) from Pakistan. Particularly important is the fact that Greece is an EU Member State (MS) and a member of the Schengen Area and consequently its external borders are also external borders of the European Union (EU). Given that these populations come from a country with strong migratory flows, it is important to note the obstacles they may face due to lack of legal documents, but no solely, making their integration impossible.
Scope: The aim of this study is to investigate the ways in which the employment and entrapment of Pakistanis in precarious, low-status and low-paid jobs affects their labour and social integration. Through this research, an attempt is made to unveil the reasons why the integration, whether labour or social, of Pakistani nationals who emigrate to Greece often is unsuccessful, even in cases of their long-term and continuous stay in Greek territory.
Method: In this thesis, a literature review of the relevant studies was carried out using the PRISMA method in an attempt to clarify more precisely the causes that lead to the failure of labor integration of these populations and the use of irregular migration routes, informal labour paths that lead to social exclusion.
Results: The residence statuses of immigrants from Pakistan, combined with their lack of knowledge of the Greek language, are barriers to their integration in Greece in terms of labor and consequently social integration. Moreover, the precarious, low-quality and low-paid jobs that they are forced to take in order to secure their income contribute to their further inability to access health and social welfare structures, thus creating a vicious circle of labor and social exclusion.
Conclusions: The failure of Pakistani migrants to integrate into the labor market in Greece and their social exclusion has resulted in the decision to return to their country of origin, since many times all means, including the asylum procedure, have been exhausted in order to prolong their stay in our country as much as possible. The cooperation of the competent bodies is considered imperative in order to give these populations the opportunity to improve their living conditions, while contributing to the development of the host country, in this case Greece, by integrating them into society, with equal rights and obligations towards it.
