The relationship between alcohol use, self-image and self-esteem of young adults in Cyprus and Greece
Summary:
Introduction: Alcohol, self-image and self-esteem mutually influence each other. People with low self-image and self-esteem, based on studies that have been done in recent years, are likely to resort to alcohol use because they believe that they will find the solution to their "problem". Research has found that self-esteem and self-image are related to alcohol use, with the majority of research finding that low self-esteem and self-image are associated with high levels of alcohol use.
Purpose: This research aims to investigate the relationship between alcohol use, self-image and self-esteem of young adults in Cyprus and Greece. Considering all the above and given that during the review no relevant research was found in the Greek literature, we aim to study the relationship of alcohol use with people's self-image and self-esteem, with the aim of recording the phenomenon as completely as possible.
Methodology: Cross-sectionalstudy where the final sample consisted of 352 participants, with a mean age of 25.8 years (SD=4.4 years). The research tools used for the purpose of the research were 4: the Demographic Questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), the Self-Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults (BESAA) and the Alcohol Use Disorders Screening Test - Self-Report Version (AUDIT). The sample was collected through electronic questionnaires - Google forms during the period November 2023 – January 2024.
Results: The statistical analysis showed that there is a relationship between alcohol use and the self-image and self-esteem of young people in Cyprus and Greece. The sample consisted of young adults with a mean age of 25.8 years (SD=4.4 years), with 50% being female and 50% residing in Greece. 54.5% had a postgraduate degree and 87.5% of the participants were single. 53 of the participants answered positively to the question about visiting a mental health professional. For the alcohol use disorder scale, statistical analysis revealed that 22.4% had or were likely to develop alcohol dependence, 17.6% had harmful use, 32.7% hazardous and 27.3% low risk use. The self-esteem scale was found to be significantly and positively related to the body and appearance assessment dimensions (p<0.001). The score on the self-esteem scale was found to differ according to gender (p>0.009) and marital status (p>0.001). Women had lower self-esteem than men and married people compared to single people. Gender and alcohol use disorder scale were found to be independently related to participants' self-image in all 3 dimensions (p<0.001): BE-Appearance (general feelings about appearance), BE-Weight (weight satisfaction), and BE-Attribution (evaluations attributed to others about one's body and appearance). The largest dimension was the BE-Attribution - satisfaction with others' evaluations of participants' body and appearance, with a mean value of 2.4 points (SD=1 point). This was followed by satisfaction with appearance and weight with a mean value of 2.2 points (SD=0.9 units and 1 unit respectively). The alcohol use disorder scale was significantly and negatively related to the self-esteem scale and the body and appearance esteem dimensions. Higher alcohol consumption was associated with lower self-esteem (p<0.001) and less satisfaction with appearance (p<0.001), weight (p<0.001) and others' opinion of them (p<0.001). Finally, gender (p<0.001), country of residence (p>0.044) and marital status (p>0.010) were found to be independently related to the score on the alcohol use disorder scale. Men had a bigger problem compared to women, those who lived in Cyprus also had a bigger problem compared to those who lived in Greece, while on the contrary married people had less of a problem compared to unmarried people.
Conclusions: The present study is a first attempt to capture the relationship of alcohol use with the self-image and self-esteem of young adults in Cyprus and Greece. The resulting findings demonstrate that this research contributes to a better understanding of the relationship between alcohol use, self-image and self-esteem of young people.
