Original Title:
Μελέτη της ποιότητας ζωής και της ψυχικής κατάστασης ασθενών μετά από χειρουργείο καρδιάς
Translated title:
Study of the quality of life and mental state of patients after heart surgery
Summary:
Quality of life (QoL) is a multifactorial concept that assesses physical and mental health. Cardiac surgery appears to have a lasting and positive impact on both the physical and mental components of quality of life.
Τhis review is aiming to examine quality of life and mental state 3 months after in post-cardiac surgery patients.
Τhe study enrolled 262 (205 men, 57 women) cardiac surgery patients discharged from the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center and recorded their quality of life (SF36, EURQOL), physical activity (IPAQ) and mental state (BDI) after 3 months via telephone. Clinical and demographic characteristics were also collected to correlate with the above.
The results show that women, pensioners, high school graduates, unmarried, those living in Attica, those readmitted to hospital and those who underwent surgery with CABG and mitral valve replacement had a poorer quality of life. Most patients did not develop depression postoperatively. Those who experienced depression and were executing reduced physical activity also recorded low quality of life scores.
The conclusions shows that demographic and clinical characteristics, type of surgery and physical activity affect the quality of life of cardiac surgery patients. Mental state was not found to be negatively affected after cardiac surgery, but its existence indicates reduced quality of life scores.
