Summary:
An innovative element of the imperial period is the establishment of professional sports. The championship emerged through large professional sports associations, which were founded and established during Roman times. Two important works which are sources on the subject are the works Προτρεπτικὸς ἐπ' ἰατρικήν, or according to the first edition, Προτρεπτικὸς ἐπὶ τὰς τέχνας of Galen and Γυμναστικός of Philostratos. The physician and philosopher Galen and the orator Philostratos, both writers of the 2nd AD. century, each in their own light and reflecting in their texts the intellectual environment of the Second Sophistic, they refer to the model of the professional athlete of their time. In this particular study we approach their perspective on sports and championships in these two projects.
On the occasion of their texts, as they are part of the historical and social context of the time, we try to understand the aspects that characterize the life model of the professional athlete. Parameters such as the first sports clubs, the relationship of championship with goodness and moderation, but also pathogens which are connected with the professional sports of the imperial times, such as physical and mental strain, the vicious lifestyle, or corruption, and which are described in the works Προτρεπτικὸς and Γυμναστικός , are the subject of this paper.
