Assessment of pediatric nurses' knowledge regarding cardiorespiratory resuscitation before and after an educational intervention
Summary:
Introduction: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is the most important procedure for dealing with Cardiac Arrest (CA) with the aim of supporting and maintaining breathing and circulation and limiting brain damage. Acquiring the required knowledge and skills to provide prompt and effective CPR is of paramount importance.
Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of an educational program regarding the application of the European Rescue Council Guidelines 2021 to pediatric patients, to nurses of a Pediatric Hospital in Greece.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out before and after intervention. The nurses who signed their consent to take part in the study attended a training program for the application of specialized pediatric CPR of a total duration of 6 hours. The level of nurses' knowledge was assessed before and after the intervention using an assessment tool adapted to the pediatric population.
Results: The reliability of the questionnaire was measured by the internal consistency index Cronbach a (α=0.87), a value which is satisfactory. 76 nurses of all educational levels eventually took part in the study. The educational intervention significantly improved the level of knowledge of the participants (score before=50.32% vs score after=84.86%, p<0.001), while the mean value of the change in nurses' knowledge was 34.53% (SD =17.46). From the investigation of the factors that influence the effectiveness of the training program, the educational level and marginally the time interval from the first training in basic CPR, were found to be associated with greater effectiveness (p=0.005, p=0.041 and p=0.069, respectively).
Conclusions: Nurses' low level of knowledge about specialized pediatric CPR before the training program increased significantly after attending a specialized training program. The Nursing Administrations of the health structures that provide pediatric care must develop and implement specialized pediatric CPR programs to optimize the knowledge of the nursing staff.
