Social model and people with disabilities in Greece: Research on the legislative framework and the views of them and their caregivers on their livelihood and rights
Summary:
In this research, a historical review is made of the concept of disability and the legalization of the human rights of people with disabilities, through the reference of the most important legislative texts at the international level. These have been based on various models of disability, which also capture the prevailing, social perceptions surrounding the experience of disability.
Disability issues these days are extremely topical and often presented, either in scientific research, in legislative texts, or in any mass media. Very often we hear people with disabilities describe their feelings, but rarely does anyone ask their opinion about their rights, laws and ways of improving their daily lives.
This research initially wants to highlight the views of the disabled, since the Social Model itself considers them the most suitable to shape political, legal and social awareness of disability.
Social Pedagogy enables, through its epistemological and methodological approaches and through the interdisciplinary collaboration with Social Neuroscience, to highlight not only the views of people with disabilities themselves, but also their usefulness. The diversity of their experiences and the difficulties of their daily life has strengthened the myelination of their brains, resulting in more solutions and suggestions.
Here are described specific proposals and real life examples of people with disabilities, to prove that legislators and scientists have not been able to ensure their survival and livelihood.
People with disabilities and their proposals through the present will function, perhaps for the only time, as a positive experience, as an example to follow. These are ideas born out of a complex reality, which enhances the creativity of all of us and the finding of limitless ways of processing information and solving problems.
