Museum practices and management of the cultural heritage of the "Other": the case of the ottoman monuments in Greece
Summary:
The Ph.D. thesis entitled "Museum Practices and Management of the Cultural Heritage of the "Other". The case of the Ottoman monuments in Greece" looks at cultural diversity and the management and interpretation of the monuments of the “Other” in Greece. In this case, the “Other” is understood as Ottoman culture and its legacy, the material remains of the Ottoman period in Greece, i.e., the monuments, which have been transformed into museums, temporary exhibition spaces, archaeological material repositories, etc. The main research question of this dissertation is: How is the study of the conversion of Ottoman monuments into museums studied and what conclusions does it lead us to regarding the way Greece perceives the Ottoman period, the Ottomans and, in general, cultural otherness? What insights can museum practices, the management and utilization of the cultural remains of the "Other" give us about the way we deal with and perceive ourselves as well as the contested past of a country? In a period of redefinitions, the concept of identity is coming back to the forefront and therefore, the study of otherness, which is a necessary, constitutive and at the same time problematic component of identity, is considered imperative. This thesis addresses this difficult problem, that is, the relationship between the "Self" and the "Other" in an era of "social turn". In this context and with a view to museological theory and practice, the research attempts to contribute to the ongoing debate on the identity of Ottoman monuments, to record and promote a more optimistic (not utopian) and at the same time volatile approach to the Ottoman past in Greece as well as the partial weakening of old views with strong nationalist connotations. The museumization of the specific buildings contributed beneficially to this direction. The intention and desire are to continue the dialogue that has been initiated on the contested past and to achieve in the future a different social perspective in relation to the dominant norms as well as the meaning of otherness.
